英語学習アプリ「Duolingo」で取り上げられている英文をまとめて学習につなげる「Duolingo英語術」、今回はDuolingoのセクション6・ユニット16で登場する復習ユニット、Repeat what you heardを取り上げます。
各セクションでは、パーソナライズドレッスンや間違い直しといった復習ユニットがいくつか設定されていて、ここまでのユニットで登場した問題を振り返ることができます。
なお、セクション5からは日本語訳の問題がなくなり、原則英文のリーディングとリスニング問題に特化していきます

本ユニットの間違い直しでは「間接話法」にフォーカスしています
直接話法と間接話法の区別
There are different ways to talk about what someone said. Direct speech is when you say their exact words.
誰かが言ったことについて話すには様々な方法があります。直接話法とは、相手の言葉をそのまま話すことです。
- Alex said, “I love music.”
Indirect speech is when you don’t use their exact words. Using that is optional.
間接話法とは、相手の言葉をそのまま使わないことです。thatを使用するかどうかは任意です。
- Alex said that he loved music.
- Alex said he loved music.
When you use a past verb, like said or thought, the verb in the phrase usually changes to the past too.
saidやthoughtのように過去の動詞を使う場合、通常、フレーズの中の動詞も過去に変化します。
- Mary said, “I’m working.”
- Mary said she was working.
- Mary thought, “Ben worked hard”
- Mary thought Ben had worked hard.
* Indirect speech…saying what somebody said without the exact words; for example, “he said he would come”
* past verb…a word for an action or state of being
* past…describes what happened before
I think that John is a teacher. I think Mary is a teacher too.
ジョンは先生だと思います。メアリーも先生だと思います。
She told me James was sick. She told me that Amy was sick too.

直接話法と間接話法の区別 Part2
To say questions in indirect speech, use if or a question word like what or who.
間接話法で質問をするには、if または what や who のような疑問詞を使います。
- Mary asked, “Are they ready?”
- Mary asked if they were ready.
- Mary asked, “What are they doing?”
- Mary asked what they were doing.
He said, “Look, it is snowing!” He said it was snowing.
彼は「ほら、雪が降っているよ！」と言いました。彼は雪が降っていると言いました。
I thought, “Oh no, I lost my keys!” I thought that I had lost my keys.
「うわ、鍵をなくしてしまった！」と思いました。鍵をなくしてしまったと思いました。
We didn’t know whether they had already left.
彼らがもう出発したかどうかはわかりませんでした。
We thought that you were upset.

間接話法で質問する

- I didn’t know what they were doing.
We didn’t know what they wanted for dinner, so we ordered pizza.
